What Are PCT International Patent Drawings?

The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) is an international treaty administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) that allows inventors to file a single patent application — called an international application — and seek patent protection in over 150 countries simultaneously. It is the most widely used pathway for international patent protection in the world.

Every PCT application that discloses an invention capable of being illustrated must include drawings. These drawings are not optional — they are a core component of the international disclosure and are often what patent examiners in designated countries rely on most when evaluating patentability and understanding the scope of your claims.

PCT patent drawings must conform to WIPO Administrative Instructions under PCT Rule 11, which establishes strict requirements for line weight, margins, figure numbering, reference numerals, shading, and reproduction quality. Drawings that fail to meet these standards can result in formal deficiencies, Office Actions, and costly delays — across every designated country simultaneously.

Unlike a domestic U.S. utility patent drawing, PCT drawings must be designed to survive translation into dozens of national phase proceedings. A drawing file accepted by the USPTO as a Receiving Office may still fail the requirements of the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), or WIPO's International Bureau if not prepared to the higher PCT standard.

The Legal Standard: Under WIPO PCT Rule 11, drawings must be "suitable for direct reproduction." Every figure must be clear, durable, and complete. Formal deficiencies in PCT drawings can delay your international filing date — and unlike national applications, PCT deficiencies affect your entire global filing strategy at once.

Why PCT Drawing Quality Can Make or Break Your International Filing

Most patent applicants focus on claims and specifications — and rightfully so. But experienced patent attorneys know that non-compliant drawings are one of the most common causes of avoidable problems in PCT applications. Here is exactly what is at stake:

  • WIPO Formal Deficiency Notices. If your drawings do not meet Rule 11 standards, WIPO's International Bureau will issue a formal notice requiring correction within a strict deadline. Fees may apply. This can delay your international filing date — and your priority date is everything in international patent strategy.

  • National Phase Rejections. When your PCT application enters national phase in designated countries — the USPTO, EPO, JPO, CNIPA, KIPO, and others — each national office reviews your drawings under their own formal requirements. Drawings that passed the international phase may still generate drawing objections in individual countries if not prepared to the highest standard from the start.

  • Prosecution Weaknesses. Vague or poorly executed drawings create claim interpretation problems during prosecution in every country. Examiners use drawings to understand what the applicant actually invented. Clear, precise figures reduce the risk of prior art rejections and narrow claim interpretations across your entire patent family.

  • Correction costs multiply internationally. Correcting drawing errors in a domestic application is expensive. Correcting them across five or ten national phase applications — each with its own deadlines and fee schedules — is far more so. Getting the drawings right at PCT filing eliminates this compounding risk entirely.

Critical Warning — National Phase Timing

The 30-month PCT deadline to enter national phase in most countries cannot be extended in most jurisdictions. Drawing deficiencies that are not resolved before national phase entry can become permanent problems. Professional PCT drawings prepared to Rule 11 standards from the start are the only way to eliminate this risk.

PCT Patent Drawing Services We Provide

The USPTO requires a sufficient number of views to constitute a complete disclosure of the ornamental appearance of the design. For most three-dimensional articles, this means a minimum of seven standard views — each shown head-on, not from an angle. SNS Patent Drafting prepares all required and supplemental views for every design patent application.

Number
PCT Patent Drawing Service
1
WIPO Rule 11 Compliant Drawings All illustrations prepared to meet every mandatory formal requirement of PCT Rule 11 — including proper margins (2.5 cm top, 2.5 cm left, 1.5 cm right, 1.0 cm bottom), line weight standards, minimum 3.2 mm lettering height, shading rules, and figure reference numbering. Accepted by WIPO's International Bureau and all major Receiving Offices including RO/US.

PCT International vs. U.S. Utility Patent Drawings — Key Differences

Many applicants assume drawings prepared for a U.S. utility patent application automatically meet PCT requirements. This is not always the case. SNS Patent Drafting recommends preparing drawings to the higher PCT standard from the start — PCT-standard drawings are always acceptable for U.S. national phase entry; the reverse is not always true.

37 CFR § 1.84 governs U.S. utility patent drawing requirements. PCT Rule 11 governs international drawings — and the two standards diverge in important ways:

Every drawing set undergoes a full internal quality and compliance review before delivery. We check against WIPO Administrative Instructions, PCT Rule 11, and (for U.S. filers) 37 CFR 1.84 to catch any issues before they reach your filing. Included at no extra charge.

5

Your Review & Revisions — Unlimited

We deliver a complete draft drawing set for your review. If anything needs to be adjusted — a view, a reference numeral, an additional figure — we revise at no additional charge. We work with you until every drawing is exactly right.

6

Delivery of WIPO-Ready Files

Final drawings are delivered in PDF (for ePCT filing) and high-resolution TIFF or DXF formats, named and organized to your attorney's preferred filing conventions. Standard delivery in 3–5 business days; rush in 24–48 hours.

Common PCT Drawing Deficiencies — And How We Prevent Them

WIPO formal deficiency notices related to drawings are avoidable. At SNS Patent Drafting, our quality review process is specifically designed to catch every one of these issues before your international application is filed.

Deficiency / Rejection Reason
TextHow SNS Prevents It
Margins too narrow or non-standard paper size
All sheets are formatted to A4 with standard WIPO Rule 11 margins: 2.5 cm top and left, 1.5 cm right, 1.0 cm bottom. Page size and margins are verified on every sheet before delivery.
Lines too faint for reproduction — gray or thin strokes that will not survive reduction
All lines are rendered in durable, solid black at weights verified for clean reproduction. We test all drawings at standard WIPO reduction ratios before delivery.
Lettering too small — characters below the 3.2 mm minimum height
All text, reference numerals, and figure labels are set at minimum 3.2 mm height per Rule 11.13. Character size is checked on every sheet.
Reference numerals inconsistent between sheets or not matching the description
We prepare a reference numeral master list before drafting begins. All numerals are cross-checked against the specification before delivery.
Figures not adequately labeled (Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.)
Every figure on every sheet is labeled with the correct Fig. designation. We also supply a complete figure description list for incorporation into your specification.
Insufficient detail — features of the invention not visible or discernible
We review the invention disclosure and plan the complete figure set before drafting begins, ensuring every claimed feature is illustrated with sufficient clarity across multiple views where needed.
Drawings contain text, tables, or prohibited content
PCT drawings contain only graphical content — no tables, chemical formulas (other than structural), or flowing text as required by Rule 11.11.

Frequently Asked Questions — PCT Patent Drawings

Are drawings always required in a PCT application?

Drawings are required whenever the subject matter of the invention admits of illustration. For most mechanical, electrical, and device inventions, drawings are mandatory. For purely method or composition of matter inventions, drawings may be optional — but including them almost always strengthens your international disclosure. See the WIPO PCT Applicant's Guide for detailed guidance.

Can I use my existing U.S. utility patent drawings for my PCT application?

Often yes — but not always. U.S. utility drawings prepared to 37 CFR 1.84 standards frequently meet Rule 11 requirements as well, particularly if prepared on A4 paper. However, drawings prepared only to U.S. letter size specifications, or with margins that do not meet WIPO minimums, will require reformatting. SNS Patent Drafting reviews your existing drawings and advises whether adaptation is needed or whether new drawings are required.

How many drawing sheets will my PCT application need?

The number of sheets depends on the complexity of your invention and the number of distinct aspects requiring illustration. Simple inventions may require 1–3 sheets. Complex mechanical, electrical, or software inventions may require 10 or more sheets. We assess your invention and recommend the optimal figure set during the consultation process — at no charge.

What file formats will I receive?

We deliver your completed PCT drawing set in PDF (for filing via the ePCT portal) and/or high-resolution TIFF or DXF formats. All files are named and organized to your attorney's preferred filing conventions.

Do you provide drawings for PCT applications entering national phase?

Yes. We provide both original PCT drawings and national phase adaptation services for the USPTO, EPO, JPO, CNIPA, KIPO, and other national offices. If your existing drawings need to be modified to meet a specific national office's requirements — for example, adapting broken line usage for offices that do not permit it — we handle that as well.

What happens if WIPO issues a formal deficiency notice related to our drawings?

SNS Patent Drafting will correct any drawings we prepared, at no charge, if they are objected to on the basis of formal compliance with WIPO Rule 11. This is our standard guarantee on every PCT drawing project. We have never had a Rule 11 deficiency notice that was not attributable to something outside our control.

Do you handle confidential inventions?

Yes. Confidentiality is built into our process. We sign NDAs upon request and all invention disclosures are treated as strictly confidential. We do not store, share, or use any client invention data for any purpose other than completing your drawing project.

How much do PCT patent drawings cost?

Pricing depends on the number of figures, complexity of the invention, and turnaround time required. We provide free, no-obligation quotes for every project — with a response within one business day. Contact SNS Patent Drafting for a free quote.
